Question: Why should I microchip my pet ?

Answer: A microchip will give your pet a lifetime identification. The registration database holds their characteristics, and will be used quickly when the pet is found elsewhere (even in a foreign country). This can quickly resolve a dispute with regards to ownership as all the information is readable by the vets, and can save their life, as the owner can be easily and quickly contacted.

Question: What is the waiting list ?

Answer: The waiting list a nothing more than a way for a person to tell Animal Services that you might be interested in adopting a specific animal. Being on the waiting list does not mean that you are guaranteed the ability to adopt the animal.

Question: What is the notify list ?

Answer: The notify list is a way for you to be e-mailed when / if an animal you are interested in adopting becomes available for adoption. An animal that is on Stray Hold, Medical Hold and other status types are not available for adoption until specific criteria are met.

Question: What is the Breed Watcher?

Answer: The breed watcher is a list that registered users can create. The list is any species / breed combination that you may want to be notified about when an animal of that type is impounded.

i.e. I like Golden Retrievers and I would adopt one if one was impounded at Citrus County Animal Services. So, please notify me anytime a Golden Retriever is impounded.

Tell Me More about Adoptions!

Your photo ID (valid driver's license, state or federal ID) will be photocopied onto your adoption application. A person adopting an animal must be 18 years of age or older or have a parent or guardian present to sign adoption papers or to reclaim a lost pet. A landlord's written permission is required if you rent. You will need to provide proof of current rabies vaccination and licensing for any dog or cat you own.   We accept cash or checks for adoptions or reclaims. Adoption of an animal is made with the understanding that an employee of Animal Services may visit you to check for compliance with our adoption policies.

Many of our animals come from unknown backgrounds.  Therefore, Animal Services does not make any guarantees as to the health, temperament or ultimate size of this animal.

Please understand we deal with homeless or unwanted animals.  The adoption process may seem time consuming but we wish to maximize an animal's chance for a sucessful adoption.  Adopting a companion pet is a major consideration and responsible pet ownership demands a considerable commitment.  Thank you for your interest in our sheltered animals.

Florida Statutes, Section 823.15
requires that all dogs and cats placed for adoption from animal shelters or animal control agencies will be sterilized within 30 days from the date of adoption.
