Rabies Vaccination

Every dog, cat and ferret four months of age or older is required to be vaccinated against rabies annually by a licensed veterinarian. Florida Statute 828.30

Harboring a Stray Animal

It shall be unlawful for any person to harbor, feed and/or keep any stray animal. Couty Ordinance 14-39

Spay/Neuter of Adopted Animals

All unsterilized dogs and cats adopted from the shelter will be spayed or neutered within 30 days of adoption. Florida Statute 823.15

Leashing Your Animal

In order for a dog to be allowed on publicly owned streets, roads or other publicly owned property, the dog shall be restrained by a suitable leash and competent person. County Ordinance 14-30

Proper Care and Provisions

Owners of animals are required to provide animals with good wholesome food, fresh water, proper shelter and protection from the elements, veterinarian care when needed, and humane care and treatment, including exercise and proper ventilation. Florida Statute 828.13

Animals Unattended in Vehicle

It shall be a violation of the ordinance for a motor vehicle owner or operator to place or confine an animal in an unattended motor vehicle without sufficient ventilation. County Ordinance 14-49

Transporting Animals in Open Bed Trucks

Persons transporting animals in an open bed truck must insure that the animal is safely and humanely restrained (at a minimum with double tethering for dogs) so that the dog may not break the plane of the truck. County Ordinance 14-49

Report Road Hit Animals

Any motor vehicle operator who strikes a domestic animal, must immediately report the incident to the animal's owner, Citrus County Animal Services, or the nearest law enforcement agency.

Disposal of Dead Animals by Owners

Owners of dead animals are required to dispose of said animal(s) in a timely manner. County Ordinance 14-49

Medical or Scientific Research

No live or dead animal(s) in the possession of Citrus County Animal Services will be used for the purposes of medical or scientific research. County Ordinance 14-37

Removal of an Animal From Shelter without Approval

It shall be a violation of the ordinance to remove animals from the Animal Services Shelter without first completing all required paperwork and paying all fees and charges, and receiving authorization from the Animal Services Division. County Ordinance 14-51

Trap Tampering/Destruction

It shall be a violation of the ordinance to tamper with, interfere with, damage, remove, or destroy any county owned and operated trap. County Ordinance 14-53

Health Requirements for Animals Offered for Sale

All dogs and cats offered for sale must have current health papers from a licensed veterinarian's office. Includes health requirements and consumer guarantee for dogs and cats transported or offered for sale. County Ordinance 14-57
