Picture is me Oakie (12 yrs) and my Beagle brother Nosey (2 1/2 yrs).

Hi my name is Oakie, I'm an senior citizen (12 years old) and when my mommy passed away nobody wanted to take care of me so they brought me in the Citrus County shelter. Well, it isn't that easy for an old guy like me to find a new mom and dad. I was very sad, skinny, lost half of my fur, had open spots on my back and to be honest, my breath smelled pretty bad.

I was in the shelter for about a month and on a Friday afternoon one of the shelter workers came and picked me up to bring me to the office. There was someone who came to see me. I was nervous and so scared that I was shaking on my 4 little feet. They put me on the counter so they could get a better look at me and I was wishing so hard they would take me home that my heart was pounding. I wasn't sure what to do but I decided to hold my breath (remember I told you I had a bad breath) and give my (maybe) new daddy a lick on his face hoping he wouldn't smell my breath. My (maybe) new mommy was rubbing my back... boy that felt good. It didn't take long for my new mom and dad to tell the shelter they were going to take me home. I was the happiest guy in the shelter. Me, and old senior guy had just found a new mom and dad wooohooo.

I couldn't wait to get into the car and as soon as I got in I layed down and took a long nap. I wasn't sure where we were going but soon I found out we went to the vet in Dunnellon to pick up my Big Beagle Brother Nosey. He just got neutered that day and boy we were friends right from the beginning, although he keeps trying to smell my breath. When the vet checked me out he gave me some antibiotics to heal my mouth and a few weeks later I had my teeth cleaned and some bad ones extracted. I gained almost 2 lbs in the last 5 months I'm living here and I made myself at home while Nosey is keeping an eye on me (see the picture). I love my life !

See everyone... even a senior guy like me can give you lots of love and affection and I'm sure I have many more years to go, and if not, then at least the last part of my life was wonderful, so please consider to give one of my older friends a home when you go to the shelter.... they won't beg you to take them home but they will be so thankful for it if you do.

Signed by,
Oakie (the happiest senior guy in Citrus County)
